Block cylinder honing is essential to make the cylinder bore the correct size after boring and also when a customer is doing an engine refresh to allow the new piston rings to bed in correctly.Cylinder honing will de-glaze the cylinder wall and the cylinder wall will have a cross hatched pattern normally between a 30 and 45 degree angle depending on the application.

We offer our honing services with 3 different options - 

1. Honing only 
2. Accurate measuring and honing (essential to check if the bore size is still ok)
3. Accurate measuring , honing and decking.

What does decking mean? 
Decking is the term used when skimming the top of the block to make sure it is perfectly flat to give you the best possible headgasket seal.

How do we hone the cylinder? 
We have a dedicated cylinder honing machine which is lubricated and has various types of 'stones' which can be swapped in and out. This machine is far superior to the regular hand honing tool or flex hone units used by general motor mechanics. Leaving a better finish and also more accurate uniform sizing.

How do we measure the bore size? 
We accurately measure the bore size using a dial bore gauge. This is accurate to 0.01mm or 0.39 thou. This instrument allows us to check the bores overall sizing and ovality. This will allow us to share the information with our customer so they can make an informed decision.

Can anybody buy a dial bore gauge and do the same thing?
Yes in theory anybody can buy a dial bore gauge and do the same thing except the gauge has to be setup for each bore size each time and this is where the problem is. It is very easy to set the dial bore gauge up wrong and think that the bore size is smaller than it is (meaning it looks like it has less wear) or set it up too big and the piston will not have enough oil clearance and suffer from piston skirt to cylinder wall contact. You need to have experience and skill.
