When the reins are taken, the gag action allows the mouthpiece to slide upward, applying pressure to the corners of the mouth and the poll to encourage head elevation. The full cheek cheekpiece adds lateral guidance, improves steering, and helps prevent the bit from being pulled through the mouth—particularly useful for horses that need clearer directional aids. The bit can be ridden with one or two reins or with pelham straps; most riders prefer two reins so the gag action is applied only when necessary. The single-jointed Inno Sense mouthpiece distributes pressure to the bars and sides of the tongue while allowing tongue freedom.
