This stencil-dyed linen noren is handcrafted by Kiyoe Masao and his son. They specialize in dyeing with natural materials, primarily indigo, but this is their first piece featuring the soot-based ink used in traditional Japanese calligraphy.

The design is inspired by the Mingei movement, which elevates the dignity of humble, functional design found in everyday artisan craft over the superfluous and ornate.
