Trail, Robert. The Lord's Prayer, in John XVII. 24. Discourses on, in XVI. Sermons. London. Printed for N. Hillier. 1705. 362pp.
Very rare first edition of a pastorally rich work by one of the children of the Covenant. Born in 1642, he was imprisoned at Bass Rock for his work as a Scottish Presbyterian divine. As a young man, he was on the scaffold when James Guthrie was martyred and there and then committed himself to the Covenanted reformation of Scotland.
While in exile, he assisted Nethenius in the editing and revision of Samuel Rutherford's Arminianism Examined.
Scarce on the market. Textually, quite good with some toning. Binding is a barely adequate early 19th century half leather binding with extremely tender hinges. Title is hinged to the front pastedown and there is a bit of weakness between the title and the textblock. Else text crisp and clean.
