Jeremy Taylor [1613-1667] was one of the most influential divines of the 17th century. He spent several years in prison during the tumult of the Civil War and then became private chaplain to Richard Vaughan at the mansion known as Golden Grove. It was here Taylor penned his still classic devotional work of the same name. His Discourse on the Liberty of Prophesying [i.e. preaching] was much-loved among all classes of ministers as demonstrating that Scripture, conscience and the Church [of Jesus, not the Church-State] should be the guides of the pulpit without interference from the government. His Rules and Exercises for Holy Living and its accompanying Rules and Exercises for Holy Dying are devotional classics. They have been in constant print since the 17th century, were much loved by the Methodists and by just about every pietist or revivalist movement since. These works were nearly required reading among John Wesley and his Methodists.
