The Rolex Deepsea reference 136660 — known as the "James Cameron" — is the most extreme and technically uncompromising watch in the Rolex catalogue. Named in honour of the filmmaker and explorer who wore a prototype to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 2012, descending 10,908 metres to Challenger Deep, this is a watch with a provenance and a technical specification that no other production timepiece can match.

The 50mm Oystersteel case is an engineering statement in its own right. The Ringlock System — a nitrogen-alloyed steel ring, domed sapphire crystal of exceptional thickness, and a helium escape valve — allows the Deepsea to withstand water pressure to an extraordinary 12,000 metres, twelve times the depth at which most serious dive watches reach their limits. At 17.7mm thick, the case makes no apologies for its purpose. This is a instrument built to a brief that most watchmakers would consider theoretical.

The dial is immediately distinctive — a deep black to vivid blue gradient that transitions from the twelve o'clock position downward, referencing the ocean's descent from surface to abyss. Applied hour markers and Mercedes hands in white gold carry Chromalight luminescence, delivering exceptional legibility at depth. The unidirectional rotating bezel in black Cerachrom ceramic is scratch-resistant and precisely graduated for dive timing.

Power comes from the calibre 3235, Rolex's current flagship automatic movement. Featuring the Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring, and a 70-hour power reserve, the 3235 is certified as a Superlative Chronometer to +/-2 seconds per day. Water resistance is rated to 3,900 metres in production form.

The 136660 is the definitive deep-dive instrument — extreme in specification, singular in purpose, and carrying a historical association that places it beyond any purely technical comparison.
