After a Sierra spanking in 1989, The Commodore VL development started to catch up to the turbos in the lead up to Bathurst 1990 after an intense period of development. With the Nissan GT-R's debut at Bathurst, it would represent a unique opportunity for Holden to win "The Great Race".

Despite this, only two Commodores made the Top Ten Shootout - this car, and the eventual race winning Holden Racing Team Commodore.

Starting seventh in the race, the typically reliable Commodores stayed near enough to the pace to be a threat, with early race leaders Niedzwiedz, Richards/Skaife, and Johnson/Bowe all suffering issues leaving this Commodore and the Grice/Percy winning car sharing the lead for for 54 of the last 78 laps.

Some confusion in the final pit stop under the Safety Car led to this car losing a half a lap to the leaders in the days where two Safety Cars a half a lap apart were used at the same time. Eventually Perkins and Mezera finished third, one minute and 27 seconds behind the race winning Grice/Percy Commodore.

The podium was the first for Larry Perkins at Bathurst in car number 11, and his first since his last Bathurst 1000 victory with Peter Brock in 1984.
