Very finely preserved original autograph letter by descent through a family album connected to John Hay, Lincoln's Private Secretary, from Solomon Newton Pettis [1827-1900] to Abraham Lincoln.
The window of time this would have been written in is fairly slight since Lincoln is here the President and Lincoln would appoint Pettis to be Associate Justice of the Colorado Territory on March 21, 1861 and Pettis would depart almost immediately. So, likely March or April of 1861.
Two sides of a small sheet requesting a 4 - 5 minute meeting regarding some political, rather than personal matter. Very nice Presidential correspondence from the earliest days of the Lincoln administration.
