There is a lot of wisdom in this little letter. Spurgeon had for many years preached himself to the point of exhaustion, often as many as 10 times per week. There was a certain spirituality about "burning out" for Jesus. It cost him. Seasons of depression, exhaustion, and more became regular. Finally, toward the end of the 1880's it seems he found his rhythm. He started saying no to things that weren't in his sweet spot or weren't within the sphere Jesus had called him to. And then we have this letter. "Nope, can't do it. Off to France!"
A perfect framing example, being all on one sheet and with a bold signature.
"Clapham,
Nov. 4 [c.1887-1892]
Dear Sir,
I am not given to
public meeting speeches.
They are not in my
line. I am moreover
just off to South
of France. Please
excuse me to y[ou]r
Committee.
Yours truly,
C. H. Spurgeon"
